FAQs About Cleanroom Ceilings

Q: What is a cleanroom ceiling tile?

A: Ordinary ceiling tiles are typically made of gypsum, rock wool or . Cleanroom ceiling tiles have a vinyl  coating to ensure that the ceiling tile does not particulate into the cleanroom. Other more expensive material options for cleanroom ceiling tiles include FRP, painted aluminum, polycarbonate, and stainless steel.

Q: Why people use 2” painted aluminum cleanroom ceiling grid?

A: The 2” cleanroom grid is typically used in ISO-5 and ISO-6 cleanrooms.  These higher class cleanrooms typically have significantly more HEPA fan filter units in the ceiling. Some ISO-5 cleanrooms have 100% HEPA ceiling coverage. The 2” cleanroom grid allows customer to mount tear drop lights on the grid and also mount special sprinkler head in the grid.

Q: Can I mount electrical outlets in the cleanroom ceiling?

A: Yes. American Cleanroom Systems modular system offers special cleanroom ceiling cross tee’s that can hold electrical outlets.

Q: How do you install sprinklers in a cleanroom ceiling?

A: In most cleanroom a large percentage of ceiling is cleanroom ceiling tiles. The sprinkler can be located in one of these ceiling tiles.  Typically push thru sprinkler heads are used in cleanrooms so only the plastic cover over the sprinkler opening is visible from inside the cleanroom. In higher class ISO-5 and ISO-6 cleanrooms sometimes 2” cleanroom ceiling grid is used with special grid mounted sprinkler heads.

Q: Can I use my existing ceiling for my cleanroom?

A: If the existing ceiling is a t-grid type ceiling it may be possible to re-use the ceiling grid by replacing the ordinary ceiling tiles with cleanroom ceiling tiles. However, there has to be room above the existing ceiling grid for the HEPA filtration, ducting, and cleanroom lights.

Q: Why do cleanrooms use t-grid ceiling systems?

A: The t-grid system is ideal for mounting cleanroom ceiling tiles, HEPA fan filter units, and cleanroom lights. Cleanroom t-grid ceiling combined with modular cleanroom plenum design allow flexibility in location of the HEPA fan filter units and cleanroom lights. It also allows easy addition of additional HEPA fan filter units if the customer wants to increase the cleanroom classification of the cleanroom in the future.

Q: What other options are there for cleanroom ceilings?

A: American Cleanroom Systems offers a cleanroom ceiling panel alternative to cleanroom t-grid ceilings. It is typically used in very small cleanrooms as it does not offer a cleanroom plenum design option.

Q: What are cleanroom ceiling tile options?

A: Cleanroom ceiling tiles are available in vinyl rock gypsum, Vinyl rock wool, FRP, painted aluminum, polycarbonate, and stainless steel.

Q: What is gasketed cleanroom grid?

A: A gasket is added to 2” cleanroom ceiling grid to decrease the amount of air leakage from the plenum thru the cleanroom tile and t-grid contact area.

Q: What is cleanroom barrier grid?

A: Cleanroom barrier grid is steel t-grid which has been capped with aluminum to give it improved corrosion resistance.
