In a recirculating cleanroom, the air is pushed by the HEPA fan filter units from the negative pressure plenum into the cleanroom. The clean air flows to the cleanroom floor then goes thru low wall air returns back to the plenum. The majority of the air goes back thru the HEPA fan filter units gets cleaned again and is pushed back into the cleanroom in a circle. The hot air can be returned to the AC unit for cooling after which it is injected back into the plenum. Without air conditioning, the cleanroom would get very hot due to heat from HEPA fan filter units, cleanroom lighting, humans in cleanroom and process heat load. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers can also be added to give the cleanroom RH control. The AC, humidifier or dehumidifier are ducted to send the conditioned air to the plenum and is mixed with the recirculating air.

A one pass cleanroom draws air from outside the cleanroom into the plenum where the HEPA fan filter units push the clean filtered air into the cleanroom. The air goes to the floor then exits the cleanroom thru exhaust grills located on walls. A one pass cleanroom does not have temperature control and relies on the cooling of the warehouse surrounding the cleanroom to provide cooling.

Can I use a one pass cleanroom for ISO-5 cleanroom or ISO-6 cleanroom?
Typically no. Recirculating cleanrooms reclean the air over and over again. For an ISO-6 clearnoom the air is cleaned 180 times per hour so the air gets cleaner and cleaner. A one pass cleanroom continuously pulls dirty air from the outside and HEPA filters the air so it is not a clean as a recirculating cleanroom.
Can I add air conditioning to my softwall cleanroom ?
Softwall cleanroom use clear vinyl curtains for walls. They are not recirculating so they cannot be air conditioned. On softwall cleanrooms the air exhausts thru the gap between the vinyl curtain and floors back to outside the cleanroom.
Is there a limit on how tall you can make a softwall one pass cleanroom?
American Cleanroom Systems has built softwall cleanrooms with internal ceilings as high as 16 feet. The limiting factor is the ability of the vinyl curtain to not tear when it gets that long.
How can I control the temperature in one pass cleanroom?
The temperature within a one pass cleanroom is dictated by the temperature of the make up air the cleanroom pulls from the surrounding warehouse. The temperature of the cleanroom will always be higher as the temperature of the air increases due to friction as it passes thru the HEPA fan filter unit.
What is my biggest issue with choosing a one pass cleanroom?
Ans: The AC system for the warehouse may not have been designed for the added heat load of the one pass cleanroom, the people who work in the cleanroom and the equipment in the cleanroom. If the AC system is undersized the temperature in the warehouse will rise and may become unacceptable.
Do one pass cleanrooms need fire sprinklers.
Both one pass and recirculating cleanrooms typically have sprinklers.
